Yoco is an African technology company that builds tools and services to help small businesses get paid. We were tasked to develop a social media campaign that drives increased brand awareness and brand affinity. One of the key elements would be to showcase Yoco’s appreciate of their merchants in a highly tangible and meaningful way.
#ShoptheStreets, a campaign with a difference. When you shop at a small business, you are supporting the people that shape our streets, make our towns tick, and our cities feel like home. We used the campaign budget a little differently, by spending it on our small businesses.
In a whirlwind of excitement, our buyers set off to Durban, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria and Cape Town, visiting over 25 local merchants and purchasing items to the value of R4000 from each store.
Next, we created an online popup shop on Instagram called @yocoshopthestreets, everything on it was absolutely free. Items from a merchant would go live on our @yocoshopthestreets Instagram page, and if someone wanted to win these items, all they needed to do was comment, tag a friend and explain why. During this time, each merchant will be profiled through a string of cool videos, boomerangs and pictures via Instagram Stories, and the best part? It was all organic.
Starting an Instagram page from scratch can be a task in itself, but all it takes is a simple innovative idea, like our #yocoshopthestreets to achieve the impossible.
So, how did we do? We received over 5160 engagements, 7 684 036 impressions and 2647 followers. Not only did we manage to launch a platform that Yoco can continue to leverage moving forward, but during the campaign run, 1300 brand new merchant signed up for the Yoco card services.
